Inside Line Promotions – WILMOT, Wis. (July 11, 2022) – David Gravel recorded his 19th top five of the season last Saturday at Wilmot Raceway, which hosted the Larry Hillerud Memorial Badger 40.
Gravel guided the Big Game Motorsports No. 2 sprint car to the ninth quickest qualifying time before he finished where he started – third – in a heat race. That garnered the ninth starting position in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series main event.
“We just missed it by five thousandths in qualifying to be on the front row of a heat race, which is so huge to setting yourself up to get in the dash,” he said. “We did what we could and missed it by one as we placed third in the heat.”
Gravel improved throughout the feature, driving into the top five by the middle of the race and climbing as high as fourth before setting for a fifth-place finish.
“We had a really, really good car early,” he said. “The beginning of the A Main started off really well. Things went our way and we gained a couple of spots. We got up to fourth fairly early and then stalled out. We ended up running fifth trying to make something happen to pass a couple of guys.”
It marked the only event of the weekend as a race on Friday at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, was postponed because of the weather.
A busy stretch of five straight days of racing in Ohio begins on Tuesday with the Ohio Logistics Brad Doty Classic at Attica Raceway Park in Attica. Eldora Speedway near Rossburg features competition from Wednesday through Saturday with The Historical Big I and the Kings Royal on tap.
“It’s a big week,” he said. “We were really fast at Attica earlier in the year and just had misfortune. We won there the previous year so we have a lot of confidence. And with The Historical Big I coming back and the Kings Royal at Eldora there’s a lot of money on the line. It’s one of the more exciting weeks of the season. This is why we do it, for the big weeks of racing.”
